From the New North End News:
On May 25th, representatives from Cathedral Square joined fifty New North End residents at the Heineberg Senior Center to discuss their plans to create 59 new senior apartments behind the Department of Motor Vehicles on the Avenue.

The focus of the meeting was to provide information to area residents who may be interested in moving in to the new homes, called The Village at Leddy Park.  The anticipated occupancy is early 2012.

Amy Wright, Kim Fitzgerald and Tim Ashe fielded questions about the timing of the construction, and the style of apartments and common areas that will be created.

They reported that all the units in the new building will be accessible and designed to allow people to remain in their apartments even when their physical needs change with time. There will be underground parking for convenience and to reduce the amount of paved surface area. On-site wellness nursing and services will be included in the housing.

A large courtyard and garden area will also be created to allow green thumbs to enjoy the outdoors.

“At Cathedral Square, we believe the ongoing collaboration with the community is what’s largely responsible for making this such an exciting and positive opportunity for the New North End,” commented Wright.

Permits are expected to be secured this summer, with construction to commence in the spring.

Anyone who may be interested in living at the Village at Leddy Park should call the Cathedral Square front desk at (863-2224) to be placed on the mailing list.

Summer 2009

This Summer, Governor Douglas joined Cathedral Square and Champlain Housing Trust at a press conference to announce that we had successfully bid to purchase and re-develop the Thayer School property on North Avenue in Burlington’s New North End. This development, which will continue to house the DMV, will include approximately 100 units of affordable housing. Our private sector partner, Eric Farrell, will renovate the existing building on the site for professional office uses. CSC is excited to re-develop this underutilized 6 acre site, which is uniquely situated by Leddy Park, the Burlington Bikepath, and the Ethan Allen Shopping Center. We know that we’ll be creating great value for more than 100 Vermont households.
