On Saturday, September 26, 2009, six members of the Rotary Club of Williston and Whitney Hill resident, Roger Hoyt volunteered their time to build three garden boxes in the courtyard area at Whitney Hill Homestead in Williston, Vermont.
Whitney Hill, which is owned by Cathedral Square Corporation, a non-profit, state-wide housing organization, opened in 1991. It is currently home to 48 seniors who are 55 and older. Cathie Kolibas, Property Manager/Resident Services Coordinator and Rich Asch, Rotary Club member coordinated the project. Roger Hoyt, age 61, said, “Everyone was well organized and everything went smooth. The garden boxes turned out beautiful. The Rotary Club is a great organization that helps out the community with their volunteer work and everyone was so friendly and pleasant to work with.”
According to Cathie, residents are very excited about the new boxes and are eagerly awaiting next spring to plant. Donna Hoyt, resident of Whitney Hill said, “Gardening keeps our hands and minds busy. We are fortunate to have the space to put the gardens in.” Esther Putnam, age 73, a resident of Whitney Hill for over 11 years said, “I’m excited about being able to grow my own vegetables and flowers in the spring. It was nice that there were so many Rotary Club members who volunteered their time for us.”
